    What is Lumbar discectomy treatment?

Minimally Invasive Lumbar Discectomy Treatment in Ludhiana, Punjab, Lumbar discectomy surgery is used to remove degenerative or herniated discs present in the lower spine. In the posterior region, an incision is made on the muscle’s back and takes away the excess pressure put by the disc nerve. This approach is considered by the surgeon when the medications fail or physical therapy did not help to relieve the symptoms. The surgical approach is performed through the minimally invasive method.
Dr. Jhawar will recommend the most appropriate treatment depending on your condition. He is one of the best neurologists in Punjab, who has treated thousands of patients with his expertise and skills.

    Who is the ideal candidate?

Dr. Jhawar will consider these points to check whether you are a suitable candidate for the lumbar discectomy treatment:

    • Experiencing significant pain, numbness, or weakness in the foot or leg.
    • Diagnostic tests like CT, MRI, or Myelogram.
    • Leg pain is unbearable than back pain
    • Medication or physical therapy have not improved the symptoms
    • Loss of bladder or bowel control, loss of feeling in the genital area, or leg weakness.

How to decide to get surgical treatment?

Most likely the patients getting non-surgical treatment will heal. The doctor will discuss the possible treatment options and with his suggestion, you can decide what to do. Before you proceed further, make sure to understand the risk and other possible factors.

    What happens before surgery?

Initially, you need to sign the consent and other forms. By going through your medical history, DR. Jhawar will discuss the possible medications with you, which you need to take and avoid.

On the day of surgery, make sure that you come 2 hours before to complete all the paperwork on time and you will be explained the anesthesia effect.

    What happens during surgery?

    Step 1
    • Anesthesia is given to you while you like on the back.
    • The area where an incision is needed to be made will be cleaned.
    Step 2
    • Incision is made
    • Through that area, the surgeon will pass the thin needle which allows seeing the disc and vertebrae.

The 2 approaches which our neuro doctor will follow are open discectomy and minimally invasive discectomy. Depending on your condition, the doctor will choose the best choice.

Step 3 Following that, a small opening of the lamina is done. The laminotomy is done on one or both sides.
    Step 4
    • Disc fragments are removed
    • The neurosurgeon will carefully retract the protective sac.
    • The herniated disc is found through a surgical microscope.
    • Removal of a ruptured portion of the disc.
    • The doctor can also perform spinal instability or recurrent disc herniation.
    Step 5
    • Close the incision
    • Removal of retractor holding muscles
    • Skin incisions and muscles are sewn with staples or sutures.

    What happens after surgery?

You need to follow the neuro doctor post-care instructions for at least 2 weeks or till the time you did not visit for the follow-up appointment:
